The Baltimore Black Sox
The Baltimore Black Sox were an independent team in 1916. They were original charter members of the Eastern Colored League in 1923. They finished last at 19-30 in their first season. They finished in second place in their second season at 30-19. The white media labelled them the “Million Dollar Infield” because of Jud “Boojum” Wilson (1B), Frank Warfield (2B), Oliver “Ghost” Marcelle (3B) and Sir Richard Lundy (SS). If they had been white players playing in a white league, they would have been paid that much. In 1929, they won more than 70 percent of their games to capture the American Negro League Championship. The team eventually folded in the 1930’s and Baltimore’s next negro ball club wasn’t formed until 1938 as the Baltimore Giants.
